Economic
The earthquake has also had a huge economic impact on Nepal.
The cost of the loss of infrastructure
is expected to be a massive 6-8 billion dollars. When the country is already
extremely poor this is a massive loss.
The cost of reuilding Nepal is not the only economic cost though. Tourism is a very large source of income in Nepal. Tourists come to Trek, climb mountains (such as Mt Everest) and to visit the historic monuments, buildings and temples, many of which have recently been lost in the earthquake. Nepal normally attracts approximately800,000 tourist per year which gives work to around approximately 300,000 people. It is too early to know yet what impact the earthquake will have on tourism, however as lots of the tourist attractions have been lost due to this disaster the number of tourist will be lower than normal (for example the Perth College Year 10 and 11 trip planned for this year has been moved to Vietnam). As the number of tourists decrease so will the number of jobs. With approximately 8% of the country’s income coming from tourism the impact will be felt by many. |
